From 'the celebrated French pervert's' 'histoire de melody nelson' A bizzare concept album that see it's hero's car intentionally crashing into a young girls motorbike and the romance that ensues. What a plan! I'll have to try that.
Later this year a whole host of peoples will be performing the entire album and 'L’Enfant Assassin Des Mouches' at the barbican.

i will never understand the hype about gainsbourg. sure, he did a few nice songs when he was young. but i really think his poetry sucked and he is totally overrated. f.ex.: "harley david son of a bitch" is pretty lame imo.
What are his best songs that I should check?
to be very honest, i don't like anything he did haha. perhaps "la javanaise" is what i bear most.
i think he really fucked up the whole french chanson scene by letting sing girls like jane birkin, adjani etc. since then, no woman ever sings with any real voice on french songs. the radio here constantly plays untalented girls, breathing in the mic, with no power at all, and they call it sensitive, it's terrible.
Hehe I agree with you Nadine. Serge Gainsbourg is too much famous for what he has done. But I like this album "Ah! Melody". This album is very nice, in my humble opinion.
