I'm a secret Lemonade drinker.

Tuesday, October 07, 2008

That time I sneaked booze into a club, ahh shit. Got thrown the fuck out by the bouncers but ended up in Maui making an album with a legendary hip hop producer.
Good times.

ok. That wasn't me, but it is super exciting that happened to Nick T. (of The Unicorns/Islands) and Daddy Kev. They've called themselves Reefer and their s/t debut is releases on Alpha Pup 14th October.

DNTEL and Flying Lotus join in with remixes.
First taste here...

The always awesome Kozyndan have done the artwork.
Plenty of lovely looking stuff from them here.

Buck 65's 'Dirtbike (2/3)' has arrived.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Alright, what's this then?

Lemonade have come up with a belter.
'Boy in Da Corner' bass nastiness collides head on with acid obivion vocals whilst clattering percussion explodes underneath.

Their self titled debut is due out 7th October on True Panther Sounds.
Can't wait.

Unexpected albums are the best.
Earlier this month Buck 65 leaked his new album 'Dirtbike' and announced it was part 1 of 3.
I was expecting a quickly bashed out 20 minutes of scraps but nope, this is a full on reawakening of Bucks original style that so many people have wanted.
Put simply it's 60 odd minutes of non-stop d.i.y hip-hop with insane attention to detail and enough nooks and cranies to get properly lost in. Add guest spots from the likes of Moka Only and Doseone and you're laughing.

Noone seems to know if this is getting a physical release but with parts 2 & 3 due by Halloween it seems Buck 65 is happy to bypass the industry and give away his best new music for years.

Anticon's ever expanding roster of artists is throwing up some pretty splendid sounds, most recently Tobacco (of the awesome Black Moth Super Rainbow) has stepped up to remix Restiform Bodies.
Analogue synth spazz rap anyone?- yes please.

We'll get to hear the original come 30th September when 'TV Loves You Back' drops.

There's not much I can write about Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention that you've not already read, so instead a big hello to his daughter Moon Unit who's starred as Larry David in the last 7 series of Curb your Enthusiasm.

Who needs the Peace Corps?

What's the ugliest part of your body?

No.1 in a short lived series of random uploaded niceness.

Tunng - The Pioneers

Friday, July 18, 2008

Restiform Bodies strike back after a seven year absence with the brightness turned up to 11.
Their classic self titled album and it's successor 'Sun Hop Flat' were sonic assaults that took influences from all over. As at ease with epic ambient oddness than with 80's electro wigged out rap work outs, their distinct attack on music saw the albums being picked up by Anticon's (now defunct) '6Months' Distribution and later led to all three members (Bomarr, Passage, Telephone Jim Jesus) releasing solo projects for the label.

This track is a first taste of their long anticipated first album for Anticon and it doesn't disappoint. The beat bursts out with a serious bounce that gets progressively more fucked up as the seconds pass. Passage's raps snarl and drawl over the track, he sounds confident with his disgust and the chorus recalls an amateur dramatics lament for consumer culture.

Listen up...

Bobby Trendy Addendum

'T.V Loves You Back' is released 30th September and I can't wait to hear it.

Hello Sebastian Tellier!
Hello Boys Noize!

Nice of you to stop by with a tasty remix...

L'amour et la violence (Boys Noize remix)

Monday, July 14, 2008

Pretty special this.
Rainbow Arabia are a duo from Los Angeles who look to the middle east for instrumentation and then go west to break out the dirty synths. Seemingly borrowing from the past, present and future I curse them for the chanting vocals that seem to be screaming NICOTINE into my brain right now. Plus this music reminds me of Hooker pipes.

Fuck. Really.want.a.cigarette.

Omar K

I know I see I love I go

Tiny Tiny Man

The Basta EP is released 25th August on Tiny Man/Manimal Vinyl in the US, whilst abroad Merok (champions of Crystal Castles etc) will take care of business.

Yet another Alias teaser!
This time he breaks out his finest singing voice for an epic collision of beauty and the beats.

One of 7 tracks from the 'Resurgam' sessions not to make the lp, rest assured these songs will find a home in the future, so watch this space.

That is obviously not Alias in the above picture but I'm running out of google image options.
Mp3 courtesy of Stereogum. Thanking you nicely.

Another Earth shattering release from King Cannibal.
Badman Near Dark is the filthy electric sound of a very angry and fucked up future.
Preview the song and it's remixes....

Badman Near Dark

Badman Near Dark (Stormfield's Burning Cities Mix)

Badman Near Dark (Komonazmuk Remix)

Badman Near Dark (Blackmass Plastics Remix)

The 12" drops 7th July on Combat Recordings.

For King Cannibal mixes head on over to Gods of War.

Another Alias teaser from Resurgam

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

A few months back the internet was buzzing over a strictly limited 10" by San Diego duo MRR-ADM ft. Malcolm Catto.
It sold out super quick and now changes hands for silly money, so it's nice they've put the lions share of tracks up for d/l on Last.FM

Essential listening for those who like their drums dirty...

A1 Untitled

A2 Untitled

A3 Untitled

B1 Untitled

I've listed them here for the sake of Hype Machine but I suggest you grab from Last.FM.
Ridiculously fast d/l speeds. About 1 second per track.

Monday, June 23, 2008

Underwater Dub anyone?

Roots Manuva's 2002 take on The Beatles 'Yellow Submarine'

Might as well take the opportunity to mention his new album 'Slime & Reason' will be released by Big Dada on 25th August.

Zach Hill could drum his way in and out of psychosis from the sound of it.
I saw him play with Marnie Stern last year and I swear he's got secret limbs or something.
Anyway, in a joint venture with Anticon/Ipecac he's releasing his debut album 'Astrological Straits' on 12th August.

This first taste is the awesome...

Dark Art

This Video for 'Hindsight is Nowhere' is suitably twisted too..

Saturday, June 21, 2008

Burst your breadbins blud.
Diiiiirty bit of Dadstep.

The Bug ft. Warrior Queen - Poison Dart (Skream Remix)

'London Zoo' drops 25th July. Not heard it myself but the general internet chattery suggests it's pretty bloody good.

Thursday, June 19, 2008

'Sounds a bit like MGMT'
'Wouldn't think it's Alias'
OK. I've taken to posting tracks in forums and quoting responses. Far easier than writing anything myself innit.

For what it's worth this new track from forthcoming lp 'Resurgam' (due out 28th August) is pretty splendid.

Now listen...

Well Water Black (Ft. Why?)

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

ContractMachination's Sole remixes produce great big clouds of dirty smoke.
In the words of the man who made them:
'A quick summation of what I did (from memory) for the Sole Mashin: Cut the beginning, middle and end out of both Real True Confessions of a Megalomaniac (So Called Artists) and Hundred Light Years and Running (Sole+Skyrider). Cut up the parts I knew immediately I wanted to use, and set the rest aside for possible use later. Set BPMs to 108, set up a drumkit with digital distortion and another with tube distortion; made a drum beat. Found sounds I wanted to repeat, and sounds I wanted to juggle; made various patterns whilst tempering the sound's shape with effects. Listened to what I had, and fleshed out any areas my brain/ear told me needed attention. Repeat, repeat, eat, sleep, repeat. '

My two favourite versions:

You can d/l all four versions here.

Regular readers of this site will realise that I've long since abandoned any journalistic aspirations. Quite simply, I've run out of ways to write about music.

With that in mind please excuse the following:
Imagine an angry factory manufacturing sounds of mass destruction.
In your ears.

Well that's Pivot

Recently signed to Warp and wronging the fuck out.

Didn't I furious

Taken from the awesome 'In the Blood' e.p with remixes from man of the moment Rustie and a cinematic take from Clark.

Tuesday, June 03, 2008

I like Lone.
Fans of Bibio and Boards of Canada should listen up.
That's all I'm writing for now.

Midnight Feast

Beach Bump

His album 'Lemurian' drops 21st July on Dealmaker Records.

Heeelloo, is it Skweee you're looking for?

For those who don't know, Skweee is another dance micro genre worthy of your attention.
It sounds like it's been made by hyperactive children on Amiga 500's. Very basic bleepy niceness...

Feast on this mix...

1. Ankyara - Mesak 2. The Franzzz(pieni) - Claws Costeau 3. Finnuggla - Claws Costeau 4. Swedish Pommak - Limonious 5. Polka Grease - Spartan Lover 6. Ghetto Bomb - Uday Napoleon 7. Sabre - Spartan Lover 8. Mouth Everest - Beem 9. Giants - Drums 10. Shock the Plankton - Randy Barracuda 11. Hoi Poloi - Stickem 12. Street - Metske 13. Emperor's Pride - PJVM 14. Hurme - VC 15. Artooskweetoo - Mesak 16. The Bubble Bump - Daniel Savio 17. We Call It Skweee - VA 18. The International - Mesak 19. This Thing Is On - Stickem 20. Skweee Like A Pig - Randy Barracuda 21. A quick heads up for those who love alt-hop...
Bleubird has released a free 7 track e.p 'Street Talk 2' and it's a corker.

Two songs...

Brute Force

G's on TGV's

Download the whole e.p at hiphopcore

A little bonus too... An Alias produced track from Bleubird's amazing 'Sloppy Doctor' lp

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

So sometimes you start off dismissing an album.
and then you find yourself going back and back and again.
then boom!
it's good shit.

Kail's 'True Hollywood Squares' fits that perfectly...

A notch above the usual gangsta ish...
this song has lyrics to die for... word perfect set up for the conclusion.

Peter Pennyworth

As Summer approaches, I start to wonder what music I'm gonna annoy my neighbours with and James Pants is gonna be the perfect soundtrack for wide open windows.
Signed to Stones Throw and championed by the likes of Busy P and DJ Mehdi his new single 'We're Through' swaggers out the speakers.

We're Through

His album 'Welcome' drops 27th May

Wednesday, April 09, 2008

David Ramos (of TOCA and Anonymous Inc) has pieced together a lo-fi instrument explosion of an album. He bounces from one style to another often in the same song with effortless ease. Whether it's alt-folk or fast raps he's always on point. He was named as one of the Top 10 most progressive Drummers in the World so it's no surprise that the percussive elements are super nice too.

Kings and Queens

Check his myspace for more rappity stuff...

'This Up Here' is released on Fake Four inc on 27th May

Monday, April 07, 2008

When in doubt listen to music that starts like an underwater circus gone wrong and then kicks in with brass and beats. After that have another cup of tea.

The Way of the Mongoose

Tuesday, April 01, 2008

If you're gonna call your band BAD DUDES then you'd better have the songs to back yourself the fuck up... thankfully these L.A peoples do just that...

two songs from 2005 release 'Brain Burger'...

King Kong

and the title song from their forthcoming album released 15th April

Eat Drugs

Subtle aren't scared to switch things up. After the intricate unclassifiable oddness of 2nd album 'For Hero:For Fool' they're set to return with an lp of alt-pop songs to complete the trilogy of Hour Hero Yes. The preview songs are still distinctively Subtle but they burrow in the brain right away...

The Crow

ExitingARM is released on Lex 26th May.

Friday, March 14, 2008

A proper Clay Davis 'sheeeeiiit' moment when I first put on Daedelus' warm up for his return.
'Love To Make Music To' is due soon but for now wonk the fuck out to Hrs:Mins:Secs.
This is some twisted wrongness right here...

Pop on over here to get your ears on the equally brilliant and extra bouncy 'Etan's Greenwich Mean Report' verson.

Something very nice for you...
An unreleased track from Son Lux.

This kinda reminds me of Bracken but with less special effects and yet it's still very special indeed...

Hopefully there'll be a mega-update later this week. I've been sent so much music but have had no time to listen to it.

Normally this Blog is for awesome music, not awful but...

Friday, February 22, 2008

A while back I was raving over Odd Nosdam's 'This Is My Element' Skateboard vid soundtrack. I'm still missing six of the songs but here's four more I've discovered...

Root Bark

We Bad Apples

Cop Crush

Fly Mode

To hear the original batch of songs I posted click here

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Panther's '14 KT GOD' album is still on my to listen pile, so I'm not sure how much Lips and Ribs have messed with this song... this is certainly pretty nice though...

Puerto Rican Jukebox (Lips and Ribs remix)

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Food for Animals make Hip-Hop that embraces the messier end of electronic music, the rapping is pretty pedestrian but the production more than makes up for that.

Since releasing new(ish) lp 'Belly' on Hoss Records they've teamed up with Faust and this was one of the tracks from the session...

Planet Say

Sunday, February 17, 2008

it's sunday.
my nostrils are fucked from cheap amphetamines.

These two songs from Akron/Family made my walk home awesome.

Future Myth

Dylan pt.2

Thursday, February 14, 2008

I'm still fiending after Son Lux's album 'At War With Walls & Mazes' (now due 11th March) but until then he's tapped out a Beirut remix.

A Sunday Smile (Son Lux's "Want" Remix)

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Apes and Androids...

I'm quite taken with this track from their 'Blood Moon' lp.
It's a bit like Beck funking out with a Queen pinball machine.

Though it might eventually drive me insane, it's worth the risk....

Golden Prize

Strange Famous Records
is making some very nice noises of late, originally set up by Sage Francis to release his 'Sick of...' series, it's gone on to establish itself as a label in it's own right. A while back it released Buck 65's sabbatical from Warner 'Situation' (oh how the major record company must've winced, I swear I saw more promo and underground hype for that record than any of his Warner releases) and moving forwards we can expect some proper no nonsense Hip-Hop from Prolyphic and Reanimator.

Their album 'The Ugly Truth' drops early May, to whet your appetite check this from the preceding e.p 'Artist Goes Pop' due April 1st.

Survived Another Winter (ft. Sage Francis, B.Dolan & Alias)

Props on getting Alias back on the mic again!

Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Tonight I've listened to The Black Heart Procession's trilogy of early albums entitled 1, 2 & 3 (funnily enough) in reverse order. No special reason why, it just turned out that way.

I especially like...

a light so dim (taken from '2')

Saturday, February 02, 2008

Themselves always put on an amazing show and this gig was no exception.
Recorded live in Brighton in 2003, this set captures their manic genre squashing sound perfectly.

Albert Brown

Terror Fabulous

Poison Pit

Only Child Explosion

Live Trap

You Devil You

Grass Skirt & Fruit Hat

Subtle strike back on 13th May with 'ExitingARM'. I'm just a bit excited about it. Everything they've done so far has been gold. Frontman Doseone has hinted at a more pop direction for the record, but anyone who wronged the fuck out to 'The Mercury Craze' knows that isn't a bad thing.

So now... a first glimpse at their new album... it's sounding gloriously twisted as expected.
Have a listen...

Unlikely Rock Shock

Friday, February 01, 2008

Odd Nosdam mixtapes are always something to look forward too and this one is no exception.
I've got no tracklisting cos in the words of the man himself:

'compiling a tracklist would be pretty difficult at this point... but some stuff came off records by: Shirley Ellis, The Sandpipers, Lightning Bolt, Phil Manzanera, the Melvins, early Styx over Tonio K, Martin Denny, The T-Bones, Mr. Oizo over Delia Derbyshire, GBV, Crow, Angel... theres a few rarer records I might could get props for like 24 Karat Black, Paul Humphrey, Touch, Los Strwck, Rockin Foo... of course theres the Mooser man himself, Al Morgan, recorded live at Barthel's Supper Club in Dolton, Illinois. and thats Rush sampled by the Dust Brothers from Mellow Man Ace's first joint. thanks for listening.'

( (( ( ((MIXTAPE SUPER DELUX)) ) )) )

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Carlos y Gaby have made a strange album to listen to, it doesn't sound like it's been created, more discovered. It strikes me as a series of soundtrack sketches for movies that never made it. Obscurred field recordings creep in and out, beautifully strung out synths wooze and weave between intermittent (yet insistent) beats.
Sometimes you're not sure where you're being taken and yet it's utterly compelling.
Headphone music at it's best.

Plug in...

Happy Summer Solstice (I Love You, I Laugh You)

Sugar Flowers (Flyin' High Is The Cornerstone)

'La Voz Sabia De Los Comos' gets a vinyl release on Alpha Pup on 18th March or you can buy the mp3 release now from itunes...

the album also features a smashing Daedelus remix too

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

The Spacesuit Catalyst has got serious skills, these four songs showcase a flair for slowburning epic electronics and 8-bit glitchy monsters...

Running Away

Harmonic 313 released 'EP1' on Warp this week and it's pretty damn nice with some splendid use of Speak & Spell style samples to set the tone of music made by bleepy toys.
The packaging hints at a puzzle you can solve on his fantastic website in order to download an unreleased track. You can grab it here too....

Problem 7

Monday, January 28, 2008 fell off the bed and blood is eveywhere.
Such violence reminds me of Amon Tobin's favourite set closer...
yep King Cannibal aka 'ZILLA' mashes out the nastiest of noises to give your brain concussion.
fall off and get up just make sure you buy the 12" of his latest wrongness...

jump up to these to get you in the mood..

Killer V Killer

A quick burst of niceness for you...
Brenmar (drummer for These Are Powers) pulls a rather fine Mahjongg remix out the hat.

Tell the Police the Truth (Brenmar Remix)
