I'm a secret Lemonade drinker.

xxx

Tuesday, October 07, 2008

That time I sneaked booze into a club, ahh shit. Got thrown the fuck out by the bouncers but ended up in Maui making an album with a legendary hip hop producer.
Good times.

ok. That wasn't me, but it is super exciting that happened to Nick T. (of The Unicorns/Islands) and Daddy Kev. They've called themselves Reefer and their s/t debut is releases on Alpha Pup 14th October.

DNTEL and Flying Lotus join in with remixes.
First taste here...

The always awesome Kozyndan have done the artwork.
Plenty of lovely looking stuff from them here.

Niceness.
Buck 65's 'Dirtbike (2/3)' has arrived.

xxx

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Alright, what's this then?

Lemonade have come up with a belter.
'Boy in Da Corner' bass nastiness collides head on with acid obivion vocals whilst clattering percussion explodes underneath.

Their self titled debut is due out 7th October on True Panther Sounds.
Can't wait.

xxx

Unexpected albums are the best.
Earlier this month Buck 65 leaked his new album 'Dirtbike' and announced it was part 1 of 3.
I was expecting a quickly bashed out 20 minutes of scraps but nope, this is a full on reawakening of Bucks original style that so many people have wanted.
Put simply it's 60 odd minutes of non-stop d.i.y hip-hop with insane attention to detail and enough nooks and cranies to get properly lost in. Add guest spots from the likes of Moka Only and Doseone and you're laughing.

Noone seems to know if this is getting a physical release but with parts 2 & 3 due by Halloween it seems Buck 65 is happy to bypass the industry and give away his best new music for years.

enjoy...

Anticon's ever expanding roster of artists is throwing up some pretty splendid sounds, most recently Tobacco (of the awesome Black Moth Super Rainbow) has stepped up to remix Restiform Bodies.
Analogue synth spazz rap anyone?- yes please.

We'll get to hear the original come 30th September when 'TV Loves You Back' drops.

No.1 in a short lived series of random uploaded niceness.

Tunng - The Pioneers

xxx

Friday, July 18, 2008

Restiform Bodies strike back after a seven year absence with the brightness turned up to 11.
Their classic self titled album and it's successor 'Sun Hop Flat' were sonic assaults that took influences from all over. As at ease with epic ambient oddness than with 80's electro wigged out rap work outs, their distinct attack on music saw the albums being picked up by Anticon's (now defunct) '6Months' Distribution and later led to all three members (Bomarr, Passage, Telephone Jim Jesus) releasing solo projects for the label.

This track is a first taste of their long anticipated first album for Anticon and it doesn't disappoint. The beat bursts out with a serious bounce that gets progressively more fucked up as the seconds pass. Passage's raps snarl and drawl over the track, he sounds confident with his disgust and the chorus recalls an amateur dramatics lament for consumer culture.

Listen up...

'T.V Loves You Back' is released 30th September and I can't wait to hear it.

Pretty special this.
Rainbow Arabia are a duo from Los Angeles who look to the middle east for instrumentation and then go west to break out the dirty synths. Seemingly borrowing from the past, present and future I curse them for the chanting vocals that seem to be screaming NICOTINE into my brain right now. Plus this music reminds me of Hooker pipes.

Fuck. Really.want.a.cigarette.

Yet another Alias teaser!
This time he breaks out his finest singing voice for an epic collision of beauty and the beats.

One of 7 tracks from the 'Resurgam' sessions not to make the lp, rest assured these songs will find a home in the future, so watch this space.

A few months back the internet was buzzing over a strictly limited 10" by San Diego duo MRR-ADM ft. Malcolm Catto.
It sold out super quick and now changes hands for silly money, so it's nice they've put the lions share of tracks up for d/l on Last.FM

Essential listening for those who like their drums dirty...

A1 Untitled

A2 Untitled

A3 Untitled

B1 Untitled

I've listed them here for the sake of Hype Machine but I suggest you grab from Last.FM.
Ridiculously fast d/l speeds. About 1 second per track.

Roots Manuva's 2002 take on The Beatles 'Yellow Submarine'

Might as well take the opportunity to mention his new album 'Slime & Reason' will be released by Big Dada on 25th August.

Zach Hill could drum his way in and out of psychosis from the sound of it.
I saw him play with Marnie Stern last year and I swear he's got secret limbs or something.
Anyway, in a joint venture with Anticon/Ipecac he's releasing his debut album 'Astrological Straits' on 12th August.

This first taste is the awesome...

'Sounds a bit like MGMT'
'Wouldn't think it's Alias'
OK. I've taken to posting tracks in forums and quoting responses. Far easier than writing anything myself innit.

For what it's worth this new track from forthcoming lp 'Resurgam' (due out 28th August) is pretty splendid.

ContractMachination's Sole remixes produce great big clouds of dirty smoke.
In the words of the man who made them:
'A quick summation of what I did (from memory) for the Sole Mashin: Cut the beginning, middle and end out of both Real True Confessions of a Megalomaniac (So Called Artists) and Hundred Light Years and Running (Sole+Skyrider). Cut up the parts I knew immediately I wanted to use, and set the rest aside for possible use later. Set BPMs to 108, set up a drumkit with digital distortion and another with tube distortion; made a drum beat. Found sounds I wanted to repeat, and sounds I wanted to juggle; made various patterns whilst tempering the sound's shape with effects. Listened to what I had, and fleshed out any areas my brain/ear told me needed attention. Repeat, repeat, eat, sleep, repeat. '

My two favourite versions:

MashinJune3rd

MashinJune4th

You can d/l all four versions here.

Heeelloo, is it Skweee you're looking for?

Whether it's alt-folk or fast raps he's always on point. Strange Famous Records
is making some very nice noises of late, originally set up by Sage Francis to release his 'Sick of...' series, it's gone on to establish itself as a label in it's own right. A while back it released Buck 65's sabbatical from Warner 'Situation' (oh how the major record company must've winced, I swear I saw more promo and underground hype for that record than any of his Warner releases) and moving forwards we can expect some proper no nonsense Hip-Hop from Prolyphic and Reanimator.

Their album 'The Ugly Truth' drops early May, to whet your appetite check this from the preceding e.p 'Artist Goes Pop' due April 1st.

Subtle strike back on 13th May with 'ExitingARM'. I'm just a bit excited about it. Everything they've done so far has been gold. Frontman Doseone has hinted at a more pop direction for the record, but anyone who wronged the fuck out to 'The Mercury Craze' knows that isn't a bad thing.

So now... a first glimpse at their new album... it's sounding gloriously twisted as expected.

Odd Nosdam mixtapes are always something to look forward too and this one is no exception.
I've got no tracklisting cos in the words of the man himself:

'compiling a tracklist would be pretty difficult at this point... but some stuff came off records by: Shirley Ellis, The Sandpipers, Lightning Bolt, Phil Manzanera, the Melvins, early Styx over Tonio K, Martin Denny, The T-Bones, Mr. Oizo over Delia Derbyshire, GBV, Crow, Angel... theres a few rarer records I might could get props for like 24 Karat Black, Paul Humphrey, Touch, Los Strwck, Rockin Foo... of course theres the Mooser man himself, Al Morgan, recorded live at Barthel's Supper Club in Dolton, Illinois. and thats Rush sampled by the Dust Brothers from Mellow Man Ace's first joint. thanks for listening.'

Carlos y Gaby have made a strange album to listen to, it doesn't sound like it's been created, more discovered. It strikes me as a series of soundtrack sketches for movies that never made it. Obscurred field recordings creep in and out, beautifully strung out synths wooze and weave between intermittent (yet insistent) beats.
Sometimes you're not sure where you're being taken and yet it's utterly compelling.
